The student or family will be judging you on how well you articulated their opinion and how well you could express theirs. So, take some time to really think about what you are going to say.Choose a topic that will stimulate the student or family. Find out what has been bothering them lately. Don't bother yourself with too much technical jargon. It isn't the topic. It is your opinion. Just provide a reason why they should care.Present your listener's perspective. You can do this in several ways. Let them help you. T ell them a bit about your problem and how you solved it. Then, let them know why they should care.Provide them with evidence and sound proof. Take for example the following example of a listener who feels a great deal of anger because of the negative things that have happened to her recently. She has no idea what to do because of the way the previous episode went down.If she were in a room full of people, she would feel a great amount of anger. However, she would also be so busy thinking of how awful the people in the room are, that she wouldn't realize that she was just being mean. Being angry gives her mental relief. This is exactly what is happening with her. Her mental rel ief from anger allows her to hear your thoughts. For fifth grade opinion essays, what's most important is that you tell them your opinion in a way that they understand and can relate to.
